Community Board Update

Andrew Simms —

Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board

Most of you will have already heard of the sad passing of board member Brian Miller last month. Brian was first elected to the board in 1995 and passionately served the community in another three terms over the past two decades – including up until this year.

Brian was a hard-working and passionate individual who worked on several projects during his tenure with us. He most recently was part of the working party that oversaw the development of our new aquatic centre Te Puna o Whakaehu. Thankfully he was still around for its opening in June. I’d like to thank Brian for his commitment and work for the Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board.

The board recently provided funding to the Silverstream School to purchase equipment for a group wanting to educate people with Māori Whakapapa. This will help them teach skills, language and culture to do with their whakapapa.

As mentioned, we opened Te Puna o Whakaehu only two months ago. It is a valuable community asset that I encourage you all to use. It has been a long time coming and something we have all needed. Of course, it would not have come together without the hard work of the community and various groups and individuals all chipping in where they can.

With the wintry cold weather, Te Puna is the perfect place to go and get warmed up so don’t waste it!
