2023 Kerbside bin collection changes
Changes are coming to DCC kerbside recycling and rubbish collection, adding two more bins to help us all reduce waste to landfill and protect the environment.
You may have clients, members or whānau who might find this tricky, so please read on.
From 1 July 2024, the DCC will:
- add food scraps/garden waste green-lidded recycling bins, collected weekly
- replace the pre-paid plastic rubbish bags with 140L red-lidded wheelie bins, collected fortnightly.
In March, April or May 2024, we'll deliver the two new kerbside bins, an information booklet, and a small kitchen bench top bin for gathering food scraps to all households on kerbside collection routes.
People will keep using their yellow-lidded mixed-recycling and blue glass recycling bins, collected fortnightly on alternate weeks as usual. Everyone’s collection days will remain the same.
We know some may think the 140L rubbish bin collected fortnightly won’t meet their needs. However, most black rubbish bags contain over 30% food waste. Other cities rolling out similar changes have found that once people correctly sort out all recyclable material, most households’ needs are met.
We know some households unavoidably produce lots of unrecyclable waste, e.g., many people living in one house, or there’s medical waste such as from dialysis, multiple births with many disposable nappies, or adult incontinence product users. People can still choose to hire a weekly private rubbish bin collection if they require more capacity.
People with a disability or medical condition may have difficulty getting recycling and rubbish bins to the kerbside. If they don’t have carers or neighbours to help, we offer an assisted collection service.
Please communicate with your members or clients, letting them know about the changes to DCC kerbside collection. If these changes will create unavoidable difficulty due the above-mentioned reasons, please ask them to get in touch with the DCC on 03 474 4000 as soon as possible so we can discuss options.
Keep an eye on www.dunedin.govt.nz/kerbside-changes for updates about bin delivery, when and how to use the bins and rates costs. During December 2023 people will be able use this webpage to find out exactly what bins will be delivered to their property and they will be able give feedback if they think the green-lidded food and garden waste bin size won’t suit their needs.
