H1 Energy Efficiency transition

This is one of the biggest energy efficiency updates to the Building Code in more than a decade and is being rolled out in a staged transition.

The latest milestone, on 1 May 2023, increases the insulation performance requirements for new housing. All building consent applications received after this date need to demonstrate compliance with the new Energy Efficient (H1) requirements.

Changes to plumbing and drainage and protection from fire

Changes to the requirements for plumbing and drainage, protection from fire, and structural stability of hollow-core floors have now been confirmed, following consultation in 2022.
