He Pānui Pāpori is the new name for the Monday Update. The name was chosen by the DCC’s Community Development and Events team to better reflect this weekly communication – which aims to be a community information sharing tool.

New Team Members for DCC Community Development and Events

Three new staff were welcomed into the DCC’s Community Development and Events team on 31 October with a mihi whakatau.

Hung Lam is the new fulltime Community Advisor with a focus on supporting place based communities. Hung will also provide some coordination support for resettlement support at a city-wide level. Hung will make visits to meet with place based groups within the next few weeks.

With Hung joining the team, Nick Orbell’s role will move to part time. Nick will be leading a project to research, consider and recommendation long term place based community support models to the DCC. Nick is tasked with reporting on this to Council by December 2019 so recommendations can be considered before the next 10 year plan. He will be engaging with place based groups, Community Boards and internal staff on this project. Hung was born in Vietnam and raised in Dunedin, where he’s lived for 35 years. He loves the city which he considers to be best place to live and work. His previous work includes working with placed based communities in Dunedin and alongside various community groups. He’s looking forward to working with the DCC team to help, support and advise local community groups in and around Dunedin.

Clare McLennan Kissel has joined the team as part time Community Advisor until the end of June 2019. Clare will support a range of key projects and areas including implementation of the Youth Vision and some specific projects to look at support for migrants and refugees. Clare has a background in public health and community health promotion. She worked alongside the Wairarapa community for four years, after completing post-graduate public health study through Otago University in Wellington. More recently, she completed a Masters in International Humanitarian Action in Spain and Germany, which included a two-month stint working with refugee families in Greece. Having left Dunedin following her undergraduate study, she is delighted to return to the city to work with the DCC and get involved with the many community initiatives that are happening.

Vicki Lenihan has begun as the new Community Events Advisor – Cultural. Vicki will be coordinating the Waitangi Day, Chinese New Year and Puaka Matariki civic events on behalf of the Council. Until now Puaka Matariki coordination had been contracted out. Vicki was the contracted coordinator in 2017 and 2018. Vicki’s first priority will be Waitangi Day. Vicki is an artist, has been involved in Transforming Dunedin and Urban Dream Brokerage in an advisory role, and previously worked at Otago Museum.
