New Dunedin Hospital Demolition Update
The Ministry of Health has awarded the site clearance and demolition works contract for the New Dunedin Hospital to Ceres New Zealand LLC.
Ceres NZ have decades worth of experience working on large demolition projects and they played a key role supporting the Christchurch rebuild.
Demolition of the Cadbury distribution warehouse will start in early March. This will be followed by stripping out the inside of all the Cadbury buildings. Demolition works are then expected to start on the Ministry owned buildings on the Wilson's site, followed by demolition of the Cadbury buildings, subject to resource and consents.
There will be minimal traffic disruption. The traffic management plan outlines that cycle lanes and two lanes on both north and southbound sections of State Highway 1 will remain open throughout demolition. There may be occasions when there are short term disruptions.
For more information please see the flyer attached at the end of this section and to follow the new Dunedin Hospital build please visit the New Dunedin Hospital Website.
New recycling hubs for residents
Three new recycling hubs are being installed in the city over the next couple of months.
Work is underway for the first facility, in the CBD and two more will be installed in the tertiary area on a trial basis next month.
Leigh McKenzie, Waste Minimisation Officer, says “The new recycling hubs will make it easier for students and inner-city residents to recycle. Residents in the CBD don’t have access to a weekly kerbside recycling service, while students sometimes have more recycling than fits into their recycling bins.”
The new CBD recycling hub, on Moray Place next to Countdown Dunedin Central, will open next week. The tertiary area hubs, on the corner of St David St and Forth St, near Otago Polytechnic, and next to the University of Otago’s Marsh Study Centre on Castle St, are likely to open in March and early April.
The recycling hubs are only for properties in the nearby area. There are two existing residential recycling hubs in the city, one on the other side of Moray Place and one at Vogel Street.
The new facilities have involved a lot of collaboration. “Otago Polytechnic, the University of Otago and Countdown have been really supportive of what we’re doing and have each provided a site for a recycling hub. This demonstrates their support for their surrounding community.”
The Moray Place facility was designed to reflect the area’s past when it was home to plumbers and engineers, metal founders and manufacturers. Otago Polytechnic’s Bachelor of Architectural Studies helped to shape the design of the facilities in the tertiary area, which will also have murals. Each hub cost approximately $80,000.

Work and Income have moved to John Wickliffe
Work and Income have moved to their new location in John Wickliffe House in the Exchange on 265 Princes Street.
The new Dunedin Central Service Centre will be on the ground floor and other services such as Regional and Fraud Intervention Offices will be on level 5 of the building.
Clients will still find the same friendly faces from the old location when they visit Work and Income at the new Service Centre.
The offices will be much more welcoming, with clients having more privacy when they talk with a case manager. There will be added security features for clients, visitors and staff.
These changes have been tested and are already in some of the service centres. Really good feedback has been received from clients, staff and community groups about the changes.
About the Dunedin Central office
The Dunedin Central office is located on a well serviced bus route. There’s also low-cost parking outside the office if people come by car. A disability park is available on Bond Street at the Water Street end.
Work and Income want their office to be easy for people with mobility issues to get into, so they are busy installing a mobility access lift in the Exchange right outside the building. The lift is needed as there are two steps into the main entrance of the building. Unfortunately, the lift won’t be ready for 24 February, but mobility access is available through the Water Street entrance (lower ground floor), then use the main lift to travel to the ground floor. This access will also be useful for those who have a large pram.
We can help clients with most things over the phone or online
There are lots of things clients can do themselves online now using MyMSD. They can check payments, tell Work and Income what they earned, and apply for urgent help with one-off costs and more.
It’s not easy for everyone to go online though so people can have phone appointments with a case manager too.
Work and Income clients can call 0800 552 002 to arrange a phone appointment during these hours: 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturdays.
