Pool barriers - knowing your responsibilities

Building Services Team —

Residential pools (including spa pools) filled or partly filled with water must have physical barriers that restrict access to unsupervised children under 5 years.

Pools and some spa pools must also be registered with the DCC. However, small, heated pools which have compliant lockable lids (defined here) do not need to be registered.

Once on our register, a three yearly inspection is required on the barrier and/or fence. The inspection must be carried out by the DCC or a Registered Independently Qualified Pool Inspector (IQPI).

More information on the above can be found on our website.

To check if your pool is on our register or to register your pool call us on 03 477 4000 or email complianceteam@dcc.govt.nz.

Note, the construction of a pool or pool barrier requires a building consent.
