Celebrations as Green Island roundabout completed
Main South Road, Green Island will re-open by the end of today as the construction of the roundabout at the Church Street and Main South Road intersection has finished ahead of schedule.
The Green Island Road Safety project also included renewing critical underground infrastructure and constructing new footpaths. Other road safety measures include raising three pedestrian crossings along Main South Road and installing four new courtesy crossings at the roundabout.
The DCC acknowledges the disruption that has been caused when the road has been either partially or fully closed and we thank the local community and businesses for your ongoing patience.
The Fulton Hogan team have worked hard to complete this work as quickly and safely as possible and we’re very pleased we’ve been able to re-open the road sooner than was expected.
The third and final pedestrian crossing will be raised over the coming weeks, with a section of Main South Road, near the Green Island Civic Hall, open under stop/go traffic signals during the work (see map below).
Otago Regional Council have advised that buses will return to the original route on Friday, helping improve travel times through the area.
