Te Puna Opened

Dunedin City Council —

The people of Mosgiel can finally celebrate and make use of the long-awaited aquatic centre Te Puna o Whakaehu.

The state-of-the-art facility was opened in June with much fanfare and excitement. The opening of the swimming facility is a significant achievement for the Mosgiel community. It was funded in part by the Taieri Community Facilities Trust, which raised $4 million towards the $19.2 million facility, alongside the DCC.

Te Puna o Whakaehu has been designed to be fully accessible for everyone with ramps into every pool. The complex includes a leisure pool for recreational play, a learn-to-swim pool, hydrotherapy pool and spa pool. The main eight-lane 25m lap pool features timing touch pads at both ends, premium starting blocks, an accessibility ramp, and a soft rubber-like lining.

There is also a hydrotherapy pool to help with rehabilitation, therapy and recovery. There are poolside showers, a multi-use meeting space for community use and accessible changing rooms.

Te Puna o Whakaehu was gifted its name by Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou. Loosely translating to “the Silverstream Pool”, Te Puna o Whakaehu was named for the Kāi Tahu title of the Silverstream which runs next to the aquatic facility.

There is also plenty of parking available as well as e-vehicle and e-bike charging stations. The complex is located at 215 Gordon Rd on the same site as the former Mosgiel Pool.
