ACC is seeking research participants

ACC is interested in hearing from people who have had the following injury types:

  • Ankle or wrist injury (including a sprain, strain or fracture)
  • Head or neck injury (including suspected concussion)

This is to help them understand more about a patient's experience, needs and how they made decisions about seeking treatment.

They want to hear from a broad range of people. All ages, abilities and ethnicities welcome, including parents, caregivers, whānau or support people of an injured person.

Interviews will take around one hour and can be held in-person, over the phone or via video call (Microsoft Teams). Participants will receive an $80 gift voucher in recognition for their time and valued contribution.

If you are interested in taking part, what happens next

If you are interested please email injuryresearch@acc.co.nz with the subject ‘Research Participant’, and they will provide further information.

If you are selected for the interview, a member of the team will be in contact to arrange a suitable time between now and Thursday, 31 August.

If you have any question or concerns about this research, please contact injuryresearch@acc.co.nz

Exciting Bicycle Opportunity for Young People at Southern Youth Development

Are you a young person, or do you know of a young person, that wants to learn more practical skills? Are you passionate about the environment and our contributions to a circular economy?

Next term, our Bikes@syd at Southern Youth Development (formerly the Malcam Charitable Trust) has some spaces available for our Tuesday afternoon workshop sessions. The Tuesday early afternoon sessions target 12-18 year olds and the Tuesday late afternoon sessions target 18-24. The focus for the younger group is both hard and soft skill building, mentoring, safe tool use and workshop etiquette. The focus for the older group (who are primarily tertiary students) includes the above elements, but also promotes pro-social work in the community, and focuses on transport autonomy to promote cycling as a mode of transport for people within the age group.

This programme is part of the wider community’s efforts to reduce waste by lessening the impact on the environment as the bicycles are either revitalised or recycled into scrap metal.

Get in touch with us for more info - email bikes@syd.org.nz or head to our website for more information. A big thank you to the Dunedin City Council Waste Minimisation team for all their support to enable this programme to happen!

Please see the flyer attached at the end of this section.

New Art Space for Hive

Southern Youth Development's Hive after school programme is creating an arts space for the rainbow community and their allies. This is a safe space where members can express themselves through art, socialise and share some kai.

The Hive programme at Southern Youth Development is a communal space located at the SYD premises where rakatahi can do activities that are important to them in a safe space. In the past, we have done bicycle recycling, computer programming, jewellery making, New Zealand Sign Language and arts and crafts.

We have been asking rakatahi what they want to do in this space, and this is one of the safe spaces that we have been asked for. If you'd like to join, or know of someone who would like to know more about this programme including timings, where we are, and what is involved, please get in touch with our youth worker, Jessie at jessie@syd.org.nz

Most importantly, we'd love to have your voice heard about how you would like this space to look and we have a questionnaire available to help us make it the best space for everyone. Check out the attached photo below for more information and use the QR code to answer the questionnaire.

The Dunedin Beekeepers Club has supported Southern Youth Development for many years - their hives live in our space and the club helps our rakatahi to learn about beekeeping as a part of our youth programmes. The Dunedin Beekeepers Club generously donates their honey to SYD as a thank you for all that we do in partnership together. If you'd like to nab some of the best honey in Dunedin, this is available for just $10 each with a limit of 2 per person. Each pottle is 500grams. Just flick us an email to info@syd.org.nz and we'll organise payment and pick up. We are incredibly grateful to the awesome humans at the Dunedin Beekeepers Club for all their support. It is such a bee-utiful partnership!
