Tenancy Services - Information for non-English speaking communities in New Zealand

Tenancy Services has important information that they would like to share with non-English-speaking communities in New Zealand, and  would very much like your help. All landlords must have insulated their rental properties to the right standard by 1 July 2019, or they could pay penalties of up to $4,000 per property.

It’s really important to Tenancy Services that non-English-speaking landlords and tenants living in New Zealand are aware of this information so they don’t get caught out in July next year.

Tenancy Services have been providing this information in English through advertising campaigns and government channels since 2016, but are aware that there are language barriers for many landlords and tenants.

A 15 second video has been produced which is subtitled in 15 languages besides English, to help people understand what they need to do.

Video about insulation (English version)

More information about insulation (Translations of this webpage are available in 15 languages besides English)

Tenancy Services would like to reach the various non-English-speaking community organisations which are in your area, so the video can be shared, and would like to get this video out as far and wide as possible.

Also available in multiple languages:

· Renting and You (publication)

· Tenants – Know your rights! (pocket card)

· Live in a boarding house? Know your rights! (pocket card)

There is also an 0800 number with access to Language Line translators.

Keep Dunedin Beautiful - Adopt a Spot

Dunedin took out the top spot of Most Beautiful City in 2018 and we need your help to keep it that way! Roll up your sleeves and Adopt a Spot in your neighbourhood, either as an individual or a group. You could adopt a stretch of beach, a park or reserve, a car park or a track.

Check out the  flyer at the end of this section or contact Keep Dunedin Beautiful for more information and to register. keepdunedinbeautiful@dcc.govt.nz

Warmer Kiwi Homes

Warmer Kiwi Homes, administered by EECA, is a government programme offering grants that covers two-thirds of the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation. Additional contributions from third party funders, including the DCC, will make the cost to homeowners as low as possible in Dunedin.

To be eligible for a grant you must:

  • be the homeowner (owner/occupier) of a home built before 2008; AND
  • have a Community Services Card or SuperGold combo card; OR
  • own and be living in a home in an area identified as lower-income (contact one of the service providers to find out if your address qualifies); OR
  • be referred by the Healthy Homes Initiative.

Grants for heating appliances will be available from July 2019. These will be capped and can be for two-thirds of the cost. Talk to the service provider about eligibility for additional funding.

The approved service providers and further information are on the Energywise website. Please contact a local provider to confirm your eligibility for a grant.

UniCrew Volunteers Welcome Party: O-Week College Volunteering

Most of the First Years are coming to the University of Otago from afar. They are freshly shucked from their lives as high schoolers and diving into a whole new world of study, friendships and self-discovery. It’s not always the easiest of transitions – but with your help, we reckon a welcome party could do the trick!

Over the past few years, hundreds of our new first year students volunteer as part of their residential orientation. This isn’t just a ploy to keep them occupied, but rather a way to start building meaningful connections between students and the city they will call home for the next few years. We know that belonging and a sense of purpose are important factors for wellbeing and volunteering is one of the magic activities that can make these things happen.

And so, will you help us welcome our freshest faces to Dunedin? Do you have any projects or events that a group of volunteers could assist with? Or perhaps just a social event that some First Years could join to get a sense of our incredible community that exists beyond the University bubble, e.g. a morning tea with your residents or social group? If you would like to be a part of this O-Week welcoming experience but not sure how, just let us know and we will give you a call!

When: 18 – 23 February 2019

Duration: One off activities during this week, for groups of students (size variable)

How many students: Approx. 1300 (!!!)

Submit volunteer project or social activity here. The deadline for submissions will be Friday 25 January 2019 so as to allow the colleges time to organise logistics.

UniCrew Volunteers Students Learning in the Community

Unicrew are seeking opportunities for students who have a community engagement component in their coursework. In amongst the community is a powerful space where students can grow soft skills that will complement and enhance what they learn in the classroom. Greater social understanding, cultural intelligence, empathy, problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership are just some of the skills that students hope to develop during their time at university. Students who have undertaken community engagement in their coursework talk about learning valuable lessons, not just about the community that many of them will serve in future, but also about themselves.

Do you have any events or activities that these students could participate in? Ideally, we would like opportunities that include interaction with other people. Each department will be responsible for preparing their students for their placements and agreements with host organisations.

We have two groups of students seeking opportunities for community-engaged learning:

Pharmacy

When: Semester 1 (25 February to 19 June)

Duration: Up to 20 hours per student in Semester 1 (individual students may wish to continue volunteering past their community component)

How many students: Approx. 130

Masters of Dietetics | Public Health Placements

When: 8 – 11 April

Duration: Variable (to be confirmed)

How many students: Approx. 30

Submit placement opportunity here. The deadline for submissions will be Friday 8 March 2019.
