The Circle of Mana and Response Abilities Pathways Training With Lloyd Martin from Praxis
This workshop delivers key models of working with young people to build resilience and to help the worker respond to youth in powerful and life changing ways.
Date: Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September
Time: 9am - 3.30pm
Venue: Malcam Trust, 45 Maori Road, Mornington
Cost: FREE (Normally $250 per person)
What is Circle of Mana and Response Abilities Pathways about?
RAP provides a powerful alternative to both punitive and permissive approaches by focusing on the mana of a young person.
Rather than enforcing obedience. RAP deals with problems and trauma by focusing on strengths, solutions and enhancing the belonging, identity, achievement, competence, influence, responsibility, and generosity of young people. RAP sets high expectations for youth to take responsibility and show respect for themselves and others. Youth are enlisted as responsible agents in positive change.
Participants learn skills to disengage from adversarial encounters, connect with adult-wary youth with trauma, restore bonds of respect, and create climates where young people can flourish.
This positive youth development training is useful for anyone who is concerned for youth, for both professionals or family members.
The training is well-received by educators, counsellors, social workers, psychologists, youth workers, and staff in treatment and juvenile justice settings. Parents, foster parents, mentors, and mature youth who are peer helpers are also welcome.
Facilitator: Lloyd Martin is the co-director of Praxis; a network of practitioners and educators in youth development that operates throughout New Zealand. For over 20 years Lloyd and his partner Anthea shared their home in Porirua (NZ) with local young people and worked in their community as youth workers, teachers (in mainstream and alternative settings) and in outdoors education. Lloyd has written several books about youth work in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
