The Great Dunedin Brainstorm – collaborating to crack the crisis
People keen to assist with solving local social and economic problems highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic are invited to enter the Great Dunedin Brainstorm, an idea-generating event which will assist the city in responding to challenges created by COVID-19.
The Great Dunedin Brainstorm on 11-12 September, is open to all sections of the Dunedin community. There are 60 places available and those wanting to take part are invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI) outlining ideas, by 4 September.
The event is being co-ordinated by the Dunedin City Council’s Enterprise Dunedin economic development team, on behalf of the Grow Dunedin Partners, a group comprised of city stakeholders including the University of Otago, Ngai Tahu, Otago Chamber of Commerce, Otago Southland Employers Association, Enterprise Dunedin and the wider Dunedin City Council.
This event encourages people from across the Dunedin community to tackle the challenges created or enhanced by COVID-19, in workable, positive and impactful ways. Concepts and ideas will be formed, workshopped with mentors and then presented to a judging panel.
The best ideas will be presented to Grow Dunedin Partners and Dunedin City Councillors and may be selected for further support from the Dunedin City Council’s Covid19 fund, which has $500,000 earmarked for initiatives to assist the community.
The three themes that ideas should fall under, include:
- Jobs in a post-COVID world
- Raising hope and social connectedness
- Supporting a resilient economy
Proceedings will kick off with an evening pōwhiri and team selection on 11 September, followed by a full day workshop event on the 12 September, led by entrepreneur and co-owner of Innov8HQ Steve Renata and with the assistance of the Dunedin Co.Starters team.
The event will follow Alert Level 2 guidelines including contact tracing, social distancing and hygiene procedures, but is subject to postponement should there be a change in current Alert Levels.

Unique Ōtepoti The Reboot
Unique Ōtepoti is an opportunity for young Dunedin creative performers to express their cultural identities across multi-platform media – radio, podcast and video.
OAR FM was all set to launch this exciting project earlier this year, and then . . . COVID-19!
OAR FM Dunedin is now ‘rebooting’ Unique Ōtepoti, seeking registrations of interest from more groups and individuals aged 12-18 years who can share original or traditional music, waiata, kapa haka, instrumental or spoken word poetry performances.
If you registered before lockdown and are still up for it, great! Just let OAR FM know. But there are MORE PLACES AVAILABLE.
The deadline for registration of interest is 31 August 2020.
For more information and to register you interest please see the attachment at the end of this sections.
Trees for Families
A forest of memories is growing on the edge of the Otago Harbour and it’s set to get bigger.
This Father’s Day, the 17th annual Trees for Families event will take place, seeing dozens of native trees planted by individuals and families to celebrate milestones and important occasions.
Keep Dunedin Beautiful Coordinator, Allison Wallace says, “We hold this planting event every year as an opportunity to mark an occasion while contributing to native revegetation. People do it for all sorts of life events, like the birth of a child, remembrance of the passing of a special person, a graduation or just to leave their mark on the city. It’s a way of creating a living reminder. Some people plant a tree year after year.”
Dunedin grandmother, Noeline Burden, will plant her eighth tree this year.
“It’s a wonderful idea. I’ve planted a tree for each grandchild. It’s great to be able to visit the site to check on the trees and to know that in a small way we are helping with the beautification of the West Harbour Cycleway.”
This year, she is planting a tree for the newest addition to her family, two month old Frankie. Because she lives in Northland, Frankie and her parents won’t be at the planting but each time she visits, there will no doubt be a photo shoot with ‘her’ tree.
Trees for Families is supported by the DCC, Keep Dunedin Beautiful and the Rotary Club of Dunedin.
There have been close to 1000 trees planted as part of this event since it started.
People are asked to pre-register for their trees, which cost $20. The planting event is on Sunday, 6 September. The event will still go ahead if Dunedin is in Alert Level 1 or 2.
