Waste minimisation in construction and demolition
Over a third of the materials that go into our landfills come from construction and demolition.
About 15 per cent of all building materials are wasted, which generates costs passed on to consumers and reduces the supply of building materials available for other building projects.
The Ministry of the Environment recently quoted that “by one developer’s estimate, around $34,000 worth of materials may be wasted in every house built in New Zealand”.
But reducing waste can also deliver cost savings, which could be through the design process or through reuse / recycling by separation and sorting on site.
Two companies working on local sites – Naylor Love and Cook Brothers Construction - are leading the way on construction waste minimisation.
