NEW BOTANIC PLAYGROUND

Dunedin City Council —

Work has started on an exciting major revamp and replacement of the Dunedin Botanic Garden playground.

This will be the biggest overhaul of the play area since the current playground was first opened in 1985. The new playground will feature a range of new structures that will expand the play opportunities for both younger and older children.

Children will be able to enjoy a new five-metre tower with two tube slides and a large, accessible stainless-steel slide. There will be a wooden climbing structure and nets to allow for a range of ages and experience.

There will also be trampolines, a series of swings, and balance steps or “jumping jacks”. The new playground has been designed with accessibility in mind to create a more inclusive experience for children of all ages and abilities. Some of the features that will be added include a recessed, wheelchair-friendly trampoline and an accessible roundabout.

The overall design incorporates wider open spaces and improved safety provisions as well as new soft-fall surfacing, seating, a significantly larger picnic area, and even more opportunities for fun!

Work started last month, and the new playground is hoped to be ready for the next school holiday break in September and October. The current playground equipment will be removed and assessed for potential refurbishment and use elsewhere in the city.
