Plastic Free July
The Dunedin City Council invites you to take part in Plastic Free July, the global movement that gets us thinking about the amount of plastic in our lives. The challenge raises awareness of our growing plastic waste problem and supports behaviour change by helping people avoid single-use plastic.
With a variety of workshops, talks and tours available, you’ll be well equipped to give up single-use plastic for good.
For the full programme and details on registering for events, see our website for details.
Oceans in the Octagon
Exploration is in everyone’s DNA; we’re hardwired to be curious. Filmmaker James Cameron’s immersive media exhibition, Challenging the Deep will open at the Otago Museum on Sunday 21 July. The exhibition will take you on a journey from the deepest parts of the ocean to some of his Oscar-winning feature films. The Dunedin City Council and Otago Museum are holding an event in the Lower Octagon on Saturday 20 July to celebrate the launch. There’ll be hands on activity, music, entertainment and lots of interesting talks from ocean based educators.
Saturday, 20 July | 1pm – 4pm | Lower Octagon
Weather call will be made on DCC Facebook page at 10am.
Glow
The event will be held from Friday 26 July to Sunday 28 July and will feature art installations, interactive sound and light displays, and performers. The event will take place on George Street, between St Andrew and Hanover Streets, the Albion Place laneway and inside the malls. The street will be transformed throughout the day by the installations and performers and visitors will be mesmerized as they come to life between 5pm and 9pm each night.
This event will trial the preliminary concept for George St, as part of the Central City Plan, allowing us to experience what the block between St Andrew Street and Hanover Street will be like as a vibrant ‘shared space.’ It is the first of several events, trials and activities we’re planning for the area over the next three years to create a destination which people will want to keep coming back to, increase footfall and minimise disruption through the construction period.
The art installations have been curated by Angus Muir, who has displayed his works all over the world, including in Jerusalem, Singapore and recently at Bright Nights in Auckland. Muir, who grew up in Dunedin, is returning home to share his best work to take part in the revitalisation of the central city.
The event has been is brought to you by DCC, in collaborations with the George Street malls.
