Applications for building consent

Gillian Budd —

Information that will assist you with providing a complete and technically accurate building consent application. These types of applications are processed faster than incomplete applications.  The processing clock does not start until the application has been checked for accuracy and completeness.

Application forms and checksheets

The building consent application form (Form 2) is a statutory form and must be completed  accurately and fully regardless of whether the application is lodged online or in hard copy. Applications may be declined if the form is not completed properly.  Please refer to the useful guidance below on how to complete an application form.

Checksheets must be submitted with each application and will assist you with providing the information that is required to enable us to process your building consent. You will find these in the application packs which are available on the DCC website and from the DCC agencies; Civic Centre,  Mosgiel and Port Chalmers.

From time to time we make improvements to our forms, however we do try to keep these to a minimum.  To ensure you have the latest version of any of our forms please visit the forms and checksheet section of the DCC website.

Further Information requests

When a request for further information is sent the 20-day statutory clock is suspended and not restarted until all the information has been received, checked and satisfies the requirements of the request.  If the information is inadequate or incomplete a further letter is sent and the application will remain suspended.

Submitting further information, amendments or minor variations

Full sets of plans or specifications should not be re-submitted in response to further information requests.  All we require for further information requests are documents related to the request.  Additional processing costs are charged if time is spent sorting through plans which are not relevant.

When lodging amended applications or minor variations please make sure the correct application form is completed and included with the documents.  The change should be clearly identified, for example, a cloud placed around the affected area of the plan or specification.  To assist the processing officer, we recommend including a letter explaining the proposed change, and as above, only submit documents which relate to the amendment or variation.

Amendments can be lodged online or in hard copy.

Minor variations can be submitted in hard copy or by emailed to building@dcc.govt.nz.  Note, submitting minor variations by email may incur copying charges.

Refer to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for more information on amendments and minor variations.

Tracking your building consent

Did you know you can track your building consent on the DCC's website?  Before accessing this information you will need to register with DCC Online Services.

Once your registration is approved you can view the status of any building application by visiting Online Services General Enquiry. You will need to be nominated as a stakeholder (by the applicant) if you wish to view further detail about the building application.
