Just a heads up the new government is introducing new penalties and increasing existing fines relating to the Building Warrant of Fitness (BWOF) process.

The incoming legislative change increases fines for building owners failing to supply a BWOF, and introduces new offences for Independent Qualified Persons (IQP) who submit a certificate on a faulty system.

The changes follow the Loafers Lodge fire in Wellington in May 2023. Since then, issues within the Building Act have been identified which need to change to improve the BWOF process and ensure building safety in New Zealand.
