Interim Speed Management Plan by Dunedin City Council

Interim Speed Management Plan

We want our tamariki to learn and thrive at school so getting them to and from school safely is important to us.

We're setting speed limit zones around schools with a 30km/h speed limit. The zones cover school entrances and are based on typical or expected routes for children and caregivers to safely get to school, whether by walking, cycling, or by car.

In some cases, we're proposing that schools sit within a wider 30km/h permanent (all day, every day) speed zone, and other schools are within variable school zones where the speed limit will be reduced to 30km/h during school drop off and pick up times.

While the plan is primarily focused on creating safe and appropriate speeds around schools, it also includes a section of George Street, Karitāne and Pūrākaunui and four urban centres - Mornington, Caversham, Māori Hill and the Tertiary Precinct.

We will be developing and consulting in 2023 on the full Speed Management Plan (2024-2034) which will consider the entire city.

Consultation on the Interim Speed Management Plan is now open and closes on Friday 9 December. All information, including maps and an online feedback form, can be found at www.dunedin.govt.nz/speed-review.
