Whakarāmemene

"Matariki tāpuapua. Matariki nāna i ao ake te kai ki runga. Matariki hunga nui. Matariki ahunga nui. Te ope o te rua Matariki. Ka rewa a Matariki, ka maoka te hinu. Ka rewa a Matariki ka rere te kanakana.
Matariki is the star that signifies reflection, hope, our connection to the environment and the gathering of people. Matariki is also connected to the health and wellbeing of people."             source: Te Wānanga o Aotearoa

Matariki signals the end of the harvest and provides an opportunity for us to stop and be with each other. One brilliant way for people to come together is over a meal. Kaimahi at Dunedin Public Libraries, together with their whānau, will be sharing kai on rātapu to acknowledge this moment, and to see in Te Tau Hou The New Year. We hope that everyone will consider taking a moment to share a meal with friends and family, perhaps you could even organise a hāngi – what!? a hāngi? – that’s a lot of effort! No worries, Alison Leonard has this handy video to show you how to prepare food with a hāngi taste, all you need is slow cooker!

During our kaitahi on Rātapu we will also be taking part in the Matariki moment led by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori .

Invite your whānau and friends to a shared kai, (or virtually share kai if you are not able to be together) then learn how to say a kaikōhau (expression of hope) to use at your kaitahi.
