2nd Place: Lament O the Datin Scene circa 2018

Eleanor Girvan, 2nd Place, Unpublished Adult Poet, Robert Burns Poetry Competition —

by Eleanor Girvan

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?

I went in search O a man
In local bars and clubs
Yer all taken, too young, too old
Or nae intae women for love.

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?
There’s nae mair courtin, nae romance, nae date
It’s just a wee swipe tae the left
Then seal yer fate.

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?
Friends wi benefits, nae strings attached
Well it doesnae benefit me
I’m wantin mair than just a physical match.

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?
I need a man who’s true
No get telt he’s a wummin magnet
And tae get tae the back O the queue.

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?
I huv tae ask tae be kissed
Yer tae busy eatin a cheese roll
Tae ken whit’s my one wish.

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?
Whilst it’s the same as its ayeways been
It’s a wee smile and a glance that lingers
Electricity from the touch O yer fingers

How’s a lassie tae ken if a laddie likes her?
Like yerself well enough tae begin
A lassie does fine on her ain these days
She doesnea need a him.
