Barbara Arrowsmith-Young: The Woman Who Changed Her Brain

Researcher, educator and author of this international bestseller, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young, will speak at Dunedin City Library about her personal journey to develop her pioneering cognitive development programme. Barbara talks about her battle to overcome her own debilitating learning difficulties by tapping into neuroscience research and using neuroplasticity to unravel the mysteries of brain function, transforming her brain and her life. Join us as Barbara shares the story of her life’s work and you might just change the way you think about the mind.

Writers & Readers Festival: An Evening with Graeme Macrae Burnet

Dunedin Writers and Readers Festival and the Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Otago are proud to present An Evening with Graeme Macrae Burnet

Hear the award-winning Scottish crime writer discuss his Man Booker-shortlisted novel, His Bloody Project Graeme Macrae Burnet’s first novel, The Disappearance of Adèle Bedeau, received a New Writer’s Award from the Scottish Book Trust. His second novel, His Bloody Project, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and won the Saltire Fiction Book of the Year 2016. His Bloody Project is being published in 20 countries and the screen rights have been acquired by Synchronicity Films.

Join Dunedin authors Sue Wootton and Laurence Fearnley in conversation as they discuss their most recent books and the daily process of writing.

Sue Wootton's debut novel, Strip, follows a doctor who becomes a cartoonist but then finds himself learning the hard way that laughter isn't always the best medicine. Her fifth poetry collection, The Yield, has just been published by Otago University Press.

Laurence Fearnley's latest novel The Quiet Spectacular explores the lives and relationships of three women and their connection to a special wetland sanctuary.

A panel of three highly regarded Fringe Festival playwrights share insights about scriptwriting with chair and fellow playwright, poet and stand-up comedian Ian Loughran. Discover the genesis of their Festival scripts and gather tips on writing for performance.

Jeremy Scott: Adventure cyclist

On the 5th October 2011, Kiwi adventurer Jeremy Scott began the challenge of a lifetime: a 2½ year, 52,000km solo bicycle ride from London to New Zealand. As he pedalled his way around the planet, Jeremy covered more than enough distance to circumnavigate the earth.

Jeremy’s fierce determination and relentless desire to succeed highlights what anyone can achieve in life, if they are willing to take that first step. Jeremy will share the highs and lows that come hand-in-hand with such an incredible life: overcoming open-heart surgery as a child to beat the odds and complete an amazing feat of resilience. Through this inspirational and entertaining presentation, you may come to realise that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things.

International Storytelling Festival: Around the World in 80 Tales

Take a journey around the world, through the stories from some of Dunedin’s diverse cultures. Over 15 different languages and performers, plus dance, puppets, music and song.

Wild Dunedin: Exploring the Realm of the Sea Lion

Come and learn about our local sea lion whanau at a great fun workshop. Discover what they eat by analysing (pretend!) sea lion poo. Tag our life-like sea lion pup, and hear some cool stories about our local sea lions.
