Maumahara

Tērā a Pōhutukawa ka mōiri ki runga he pae whakamahara mō aku tau kahurangi kua ngaro.
Pīratarata mai rā koutou hei whetū i te pō, kōrekoreko mai rā hoki koutou i te rokiroki o ngā mahara mō ake tonu atu e.
Pōhutukawa is the star connected to those that have passed on.                                                                                                                                               (source: Te Wānanga o Aotearoa)

Libraries and archives are pools of knowledge and taoka. These pools quench our thirst for wisdom and understanding. Archives provide an opportunity for us to gather our collective experiences and ensure that the past is not forgotten. The star Pōhutukawa reminds us not to forget our loved ones who are no longer physically with us. This year at Dunedin Public Libraries we set up a remembrance tree for staff, and invited them to add the name of someone special who had passed this last year in particular.

He Purapura Marara – Scattered Seeds is another important way we work to remember the past in the library. This digital archive preserves the stories and memories of the people who call Ōtepoti home. Join Laura Shepard in kōrero with Jill Bowie, our Digital Outreach Co-ordinator, about this amazing community archive.
