The Beach

Wind rippling her hair
Standing motionless
Body high on adrenaline
Mind - clear
Heart - pounding
Breath - heavy
                                                                                                            She was finally free

Sand between her toes
And the taste of salt on her lips
Transporting her back
Doof
                                                              Doof
                                                                                                                                 Doof

Her feet pounding the ground
Imitating - remembering
Unknown forces pushing her back
Back to the rationed food
The pain
The collar
The prison…
                                                                                                                 Running away

With a ‘click’
She was back to reality
Being pulled away
From the galloping waves
And the embrace of the sun
And the tingling sand
                                                                                                             And the freedom

A final burst of effort
Calling for help
For someone to save her
For the tyranny to end
Collar and leash suffocating her
Dragging her to her cell
She screamed a silent cry…
                                                                                                                             Woof.
