Reading with your e-reader using Adobe Digital Editions

Colleen Marshall —

You may have decided to purchase an e-reader to gain access to our fantastic range of ebooks from our digital library. Or you may have resurrected an e-reader that you had tucked away in a drawer, long forgotten. If you need instructions on how to set up your e-reader to read our ebooks, read on...

Ebooks from Borrow Box and Wheelers can be read on Kobo e-readers by using reader software called Adobe Digital Editions. (Sadly library books are unable to be read on Amazon Kindles). The software is available for Windows and Macintosh, so begin by installing it on your home PC or laptop. Then authorise Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) with a valid Adobe ID following these instructions.

From our digital library website page choose either the Wheelers site or the Borrow Box site, sign into your account with your library barcode number and PIN/password, and select a book to borrow. With Borrow Box confirm your loan and choose the option 'Download for reader (Adobe ePub)'. With Wheelers choose 'view all reading options with this title' and then under 'using reader software' choose read via Adobe. If you do not see these options your book cannot be read using ADE, so try another book.

Once the ebook is downloaded to ADE, connect your e-reader to your computer with its cord. Your e-reader must be authorised with the same Adobe ID you used to authorise ADE. To do this, follow the instructions for authorising a Kobo eReader in Wheelers Step by Step Guides. Your e-reader will appear in ADE on the left hand side. Your book should appear in the bookshelf on the right hand side. Simply drag and drop the ebook onto your e-reader, and the file will transfer across. Disconnect your e-reader and the ebook will load and open.

If you file doesn't open automatically with ADE, find the file with extension .acsm in your downloads folder (it should be the most recent one downloaded) and either right-click on the file and choose "open with" from the menu, or drag and drop the file onto ADE (which should be open on your desktop for this).

You may also search for an e-book on our online catalogue. If it is available for loan, choose the download button that appears on the right side of the page; this will take to you to either Wheelers or Borrow Box to sign in and you can continue with the borrowing and downloading process.
