Join us for half an hour of books, stories and waiata in te reo Māori and English. Suitable for preschoolers and whānau who want to have fun and enjoy the beauty of te reo Māori.

Puaka Matariki Hīkoi and Waiata

Te Rōpū Waiata O Te Kaunihere-a-rohe o Ōtepoti The Dunedin City Council Waiata Group will fill the city with the wonderful sound of waiata to celebrate this Matariki! 

Feel free to join the hīkoi at any of the three locations: First stop is in the Octagon, then travelling to Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Dunedin City Library and finishing at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum.

Please dress warm, song sheets will be available – all welcome! 

11am – 12pm, Thursday 27 June

Free – meet at Octagon on the lawn. In case of rain, meet in DPAG Foyer.

Learn about the whetū surrounding Matariki as you search for hidden stars across the following locations:
Dunedin Public Libraries
Dunedin Public Art Gallery
Toitū Otago Settlers Museum

Pick up an activity book from any of these places, and let your feet take you wandering to the stars!

Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision present Hauhake tū, ka tō Matariki, a special compilation of audiovisual taonga from their collection to celebrate Matariki 2024. This year, they were inspired by the whakataukī “Hauhake tū, ka tō Matariki – the harvest ends when Matariki sets”.
