What's On

What's on?

Votes for women, knitting up a storm in Blueskin Bay, finding out how to age successfully with Dr Barak, plus Jo Seager on tour and a Spanish language film festival. Three competitions, a workshop, a fantasy of writers, and the visions of Glen Hazelton. And then there's the school holiday programme... Variety is definitely the spice of our life!

Aging Successfully: Good genes are nice, but joy is better…
Dr Yoram Barak returns to City Library for another series of talks this spring.
For this series, Yoram will be sharing his considerable experience and research in discussing how to age successfully. The talks will explore different perspectives of aging: what we lose as we age, what changes for us, and what we gain as we grow older. These insights are used to develop a strategy for aging well and aging happily.
Associate Professor of the University of Otago’s Department of Psychological Medicine, Dr Barak’s talks are warm, humorous, thought-provoking and uplifting. Throughout his presentation, he draws on the scientific community’s latest findings in a way that is accessible and thoroughly engaging.
Note: It is recommended that you attend all three talks as their content is linked, but you can attend individual talks if you prefer. Please book for each session separately either through the event listing on the Library website, or by contacting the library.

Author Talk: Neville Peat – The Invading Sea
Introduced by Sir Alan Mark, join Dunedin author Neville Peat as he discusses his latest book, investigating the multiple facets of coastal hazard – the science of a warming, rising, stormier sea; the risky reality for many low-lying communities; the shortcomings and often sluggish response of central government and councils; the engineered solutions and the curly question of insurance.
Neville Peat lives close to the coast on Otago Peninsula. He has written extensively about New Zealand geography and the natural environment. His titles range from Antarctica to the atolls of Tokelau. In the 2018 New Year Honours, he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to conservation.
Copies of The Invading Sea Coastal Hazards and Climate Change in Aotearoa New Zealand will be available for purchase, courtesy of University Book Shop Otago.
