Foraging Fun: Exploring Aotearoa's Fungi Wonderland

Rachel shares the fascination of fungi with Liv Sisson's first book

The writer of this beautiful book, Fungi of Aotearoa: A Curious Forager's Field Guidesure knows what she’s talking about. She’s been a forager and fungi enthusiast for as long as she remembers and now leads foraging tours all around Aotearoa.

Consequently, her book is full of up to the minute information and advice for fungi fanciers and foragers. If you are interested in foraging for fungi, how to identify your finds and what fungi are edible, you will find this book very useful. That’s not all. 'Fungi' is full of all sorts of fascinating facts. For example, Sisson discusses the medicinal properties of fungi and mentions their use in rongoā (traditional Māori medicine) as well as current studies investigating local fungi for potential antibiotic applications.

The pages are packed with astoundingly beautiful images and the photographer has made a great job of capturing the luminescent qualities of many of the species. I am surprised by the number and variety of fungi we have here in Aotearoa.

Coming upon this beautiful publication has inspired me to learn a little more about this fascinating subject. This is book that will appeal to people young and old.
