International Poetry Day: Poetry on Prescription by Kay Mercer

World Poetry Day: Poetry on Prescription

The healing power of poetry will be available free to all on Saturday 21st March in Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature.

UNESCO World Poetry Day has inspired us to team up with the Dunedin Fringe Festival and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature to bring you a shot of poetry to uplift and delight.

Anyone popping down to the City Library for a book, a magazine, a session on the computer or just a place to chill on Saturday 21st March can also take up the chance to pay a visit to our poetry doctor. After navigating the doctor's receptionist, you'll meet with the doc, who'll prescribe a sweet dose of live poetry, read by some of Dunedin's talented circle of poets. The doctor will also give you some prescription poetry to take home to continue your treatment.

The idea for Poetry on Prescription was inspired by Dunedin poet Ruth Arnison's Poems in the Waiting Room, and the UK's Emergency Poet and Poetry Pharmacy, and we thought it would be great fun to emulate these examples and bring you a little literary therapy to brighten your day.

World Poetry Day is celebrated by UNESCO Cities of Literature throughout the world, and in Dunedin you'll have the opportunity to hear some of Dunedin's finest poets reading their original works.

Drop in to the clinic, slip off your shoes, sit back and enjoy.
