Reed Gallery Exhibition: Children of God

The summer Reed Gallery Exhibition explores Christian books written with the primary intention of instilling a strong religious education and faith in children, and features a diverse range of children's religious books from the Reed and Special Collections, including some of Reed's own publications in Christian education.

Alfred Reed began his distinguished publishing career as a small-time supplier of imported Sunday school materials in Dunedin in the early 1900's. His Sunday School Supply Stores boasted that they offered "everything for the modern Sunday school".

Reed devoted significant time and money to build up his collection of rare books and manuscripts, chiefly of a Biblical nature. His original 1948 gift to Dunedin Public Libraries was followed by further donations until his death in 1975.

Robert Burns Poetry Competition

Write a poem in English or Scots, inspired by the life or works of Robert Burns.
The Robert Burns Poetry Competition is a collaboration between the Dunedin Public Libraries and The Dunedin Burns Club, with the support of the Department of Irish and Scottish Studies at the University of Otago, and the Otago Daily Times.
This year the Youth section of the competition will be open from 14th September, while the Published and Unpublished Poets sections open on Monday 30th November. The closing date for the competition is Tuesday 5th January, and entries will be judged by two locally-based published poets, including the 2015 Robert Burns Fellow. The winners will be announced and presented with prizes on Robert Burns' birthday, 25 January 2016.
