Summer Reading Challenge: Wild About Reading
Read four books over the summer; come and have a chat with one of our children’s library staff about what you thought of the book and earn a sticker. Collect four stickers for a bonus and collect your prize certificate. Pick up your activity pack from your local Dunedin Public Library and enrol for the challenge.

Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature Robert Burns Poetry Competition

In partnership with Dunedin Public Libraries and Dunedin Burns Club. Submit a copy of your poem in English or Scots, inspired by the life or works of Robert Burns.

Poems must be no longer than 500 words and must be submitted by 12pm Thursday 30th November 2017. Cash prizes, medals and certificates for the winners will be presented at the awards ceremony at Dunedin City Library at 5pm 25th January 2018. Winning poems will be published in the Otago Daily Times, and winners will also receive an invitation to the annual Robert Burns Supper on 25th January at Toitū Settlers’ Museum.

Author Talk: Siouxie Wiles – Antibiotic Resistance

In ten years’ time, will antibiotics still work? Have we let bacteria get the upper hand in the evolutionary arms race?

In the 1920s the discovery of the antibiotic penicillin started a golden age of medicine. However, experts warn that the end of that age may be just a decade away. In this talk, microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles explores the looming crisis of antibiotic resistance and its threat to New Zealand.

The Musical Life of David Bowie – a library tour

Professor of Music, Dr Ian Chapman, explores the huge social and musical influence of this iconic 70’s rock star. The talk includes performances of Bowie's works throughout his incredible career.

Arthur Ransome: story-teller, journalist, sailor, fisherman and suspected spy

Cheryl Paget, Co-ordinator of The Arthur Ransome Society of New Zealand will speak about the man, his children’s novels and the rumour that he acted as a British Spy during the Russian Revolution.

There was much more to Arthur Ransome than his Swallows and Amazons novels alone. He wrote more than twenty-five other books, on a wide range of subjects, many related to his own life, experience and interests which were wide ranging, exciting and deeply fascinating.
