Brand new and not-to-be-missed reads from the Young Adult collection

Baby Love Jacqueline Wilson

For ages 12+

Another wonderful human story by one of the great writers for young people. Set in the 1960’s, we meet Laura, a lonely 14-year-old who is shy and naive. When she makes friends with the wealthy and popular Nina her life changes. On an outing with Nina, Laura meets a French exchange student whose attention makes her feel special. But walking home with Leon ends terribly and Laura is shocked months later at the consequences. Sent away by her horrified family Laura’s bravery and struggle is a heart-warming read and we can empathise with her. This is a story that many young women have, and still face, around the world. It is great to have a book that so respectfully addresses the issues of consent, pregnancy, and adoption for young people.

The Backups: A Summer of Stardom Alex de Campi, Lara Kane, Dee Cunniffe, Ted Brandt

In this graphic novel three junior high school girls get the opportunity of a lifetime to be singers for a famous pop star. Little do they realise what they are getting into as they grapple with the demands of the legendary Nika Nitro while having to contend with their own insecurities and relationships. This is a fun book and very entertaining.

Touch and Go Joe Joe Wells

Joe Wells, 16, tells the story of his battle with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). His symptoms started when he was about nine years old, but he was not officially diagnosed until aged 12 years. This honest account of what it is like to live with OCD is both informative and amusing. It is a great book for anyone who has OCD or knows someone who lives with this condition.
