Hocken: Prince of Collectors. Donald Jackson Kerr

Rangihiroa Panoho’s new book looks at Māori art from both the ‘traditional’ and ‘contemporary’ viewpoints, utilising the reflexive metaphor of a river. The book is extensively illustrated and includes new photography from renowned New Zealand photographers, Mark Adams and Haruhiko Sameshima.

The People’s University: A Centennial History of the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association 1915-2015. Ian Dougherty
An egalitarian voluntary association run on participatory democratic principles, the Canterbury Workers Educational Association has made an immense contribution to the education of thousands of working class men and women in the Canterbury area. A Place to Go On From: The Collected Poems of Iain Lonie. Edited by David Howard
Editor David Howard has assembled this collection of the largely unrecognised Dunedin poet with a determination to rescue Lonie’s work from an otherwise likely oblivion. Vincent O’Sullivan comments that he, “can’t sidestep a certain shame at not realising until now how fine and important a writer Lonie was.”

Ruth, Roger and Me: Debts and Legacies. Andrew Dean
“Your words of ‘discomfort, loss and disconnection’ don’t resonate with me at all.” Thus did Ruth Richardson, author of the 1991 Mother of all Budgets, react to Dean’s telling of the experiences of the generation who grew up in the shadow of the neoliberal reforms of the Lange and Bolger governments, who have seen their life chances dramatically curtailed by labour market deregulation, de-unionisation, mass unemployment, and the commodification and privatisation of public services.

Travels of Hochstetter and Haast in New Zealand 1858-1860. Mike Johnston and
Sascha Nolden
Dr Ferdinand Hochstetter arrived in New Zealand with fellow German, Julian Haast, as a geologist on the Austrian Novara Expedition. The series of geological maps that Hochstetter produced were foundational for New Zealand geology. This is a beautifully illustrated book that draws on previously unpublished archival material in New Zealand and European archives.
