Teen Book Review: Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Book 1 of the Lunar Chronicles Series.

New Beijing is a city in the future that is over crowded with a mix of humans and androids. There is a deadly plague killing off the humans, and there is a lunar colony that is threatening to take over the city. This is the first book in the Lunar Chronicles series and follows the life of Linh Cinder. She lives with her stepmother and two stepsisters.

If this sounds familiar – it is. It brings the classic fairy tale of Cinderella into a modern science-fiction/fantasy story with very interesting twists in the tale. She still gets to meet her prince charming in the form of Prince Kai and she works as a mechanic at the local market. I will not give any more away.

Both my teenage daughter and I have read the first three books and cannot wait for the fourth book to come out in November 2015. I loved all the little surprises that changed the classic storyline.

Each new book in the series concentrates on a new character but keeps the other characters in the storyline.

Cinder – Cinderella
Scarlet – Red Riding Hood
Cress – Rapunzel
Winter – Snow White
Fairest – prequel about Queen Levana
