Ali shares her best content consumption tips to give older teens some options these school holidays.
As a professional TikTok doomscroller and Gen Z Elder, I know how easy it can be to while away the hours outside of school indulging in online entertainment brainrot. As your hyper-online-teen predecessor, I'd like to challenge you to nurture your brain with some great content from the libraries!
BeamaFilm
Sometimes it can be hard to find the perfect movie, but that's what Beamafilm is for! No need to sign up for a free trial and risk forgetting to cancel, Beamafilm is free when you use your library card, just head to beamafilm.com/instructions/dunedin to sign up.
Handsome Devil (M)- Nicholas Galitzine did not just waltz off the pages of Red White and Royal Blue, he's been a heartthrob for years! Handsome Devil follows him as Conor, a talented rugby player with a passion for music, he struggles between conforming to masculine expectations and embracing his artistic side.
Heathers (M) - A cult classic, Heathers is a must-watch, especially for those who enjoyed the Heathers Musical trend on TikTok. Heathers stars Winona Ryder as a popular teenager (surprisingly not named Heather) challenging her high school's cruel social hierarchy through blackmail, revenge, and murder.
How to Talk to Girls at Parties (R16)- Based on the Neil Gaiman short story of the same name (found in The Neil Gaiman Library) the story follows punk Enn through 1970s London, where he meets Zan, a naive humanoid alien. They bond, and Enn turns to the punk scene to help liberate her from a fatal ritual. This is such a fun kooky film featuring familiar faces such as Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning.
Super Mario Bros. (PG) - While you won't find a beautiful rendition of Peaches by Jack Black in the 1993 version of this film, it's a historic feat as the first (and according to some the worst) video game adaptation of all time.

Comics Plus is a great option for the graphic novel lover who would rather browse from bed than between the shelves. For unlimited access to thousands of digital comics, graphic novels, and manga head to Comics Plus to learn more.
Stranger Things Graphic Novels - Get ready! While we don't know exactly when the next season of the show will release, production has begun. What better time to get stuck into the graphic novels featuring stories from the shows four seasons, as well as spin-offs and special Holiday Edition stories?
Curated by Bex Ollerton, this anthology features comics from thirty autistic creators, sharing their experiences in a world that often misunderstands them. The book offers vibrant, comic-style illustrations exploring various aspects of autistic life, from pre-diagnosis experiences to coping strategies for overstimulation, providing unique insights with the emotional depth of memoir.
If you can't get enough of the quirky fun being had by the Belcher family, now you can enjoy new stories in a new way! I started browsing the comics after my flatmate and I questioned which character we are most like (I'm a mix of Linda and Gene, my flatmate is Tina). Read the comics and assess who in your life reflects characters from the show, it tells you a lot about people!
