Hostage Radio Play coming soon!

On 21 June, Dunedin City Library will host a live reading of Hostage, an original radio play which will air later in June on Otago Access Radio.

The play has been written collaboratively by The Playgroup, a collective of local writers who got together after completing an Otago Summer School Wordsmith writing course taught by Caroline Lark.

Prompted by an article in North and South about notorious NZ hostage-taker Antonie Dixon, and taking as inspiration the superb dramatic monologues of English playwright Alan Bennett, the group decided to write a contemporary NZ hostage drama in a series of short monologues. As each character connected with the drama gives their take on events, the truth gradually emerges, and the story comes to a shocking conclusion.

Playgroup members have greatly enjoyed the challenge of writing in different voices (including a police officer, a nosy neighbour, a guilt-ridden foster-parent, and a jealous son) and look forward to the production process.

The live reading will be performed by local actors from Suitcase Theatre, a dynamic group of young actors building a reputation for high-quality community-focused theatre in Dunedin. Their recent Fringe Festival production Mental Notes, performed in conjunction with Artsenta, attracted a very favourable response.

The project also has the support of the Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature and all stakeholders are hoping to stimulate further interest among local authors in producing radio plays for performance on OAR.

The live reading will commence at 6.30pm on Thurs 21 June, and will be followed by complimentary tea and coffee. Admission is free.
