Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency

The City of Literature team is thrilled that the judges have chosen the first-ever Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Resident – Melbourne’s award-winning writer and essayist Shu-Ling Chua 蔡淑羚.

The writers residency, launched by the City of Literature and the Caselberg Trust on 3 March 2023 to mark International Writers’ Day, will be offered every second year to writers from the other 41 Cities of Literature, and solely to applicants from Ōtepoti and across Aotearoa every other year. Writers from Aotearoa are warmly encouraged to keep a look out on our website for 2024 applications.

The judges were very impressed by the high standard of the 42 applications received from 22 Cities of Literature across the world, but Shu-Ling’s application stood out for them. Shu-Ling will live and write in the beautiful Caselberg House in Broad Bay for six weeks from October to mid-November 2023. Having the space to focus on her interesting essay collection on “art, intimacy, longing, and the blurry boundaries between private and public” will no doubt make for an enriching residency for Shu-Ling and will be enriching for Ōtepoti as well.

Shu-Ling is very excited to visit Ōtepoti and the City of Literature team can’t wait to show her around our wonderful city.

Celebrating International Days

International Mother Language Day, 21 February 2023

We were thrilled to share a Cities of Literature chain poem created by our friends at Manchester UNESCO City of Literature for International Mother Language Day. Two versions of ‘Words from the Childhood Home’ were exhibited in Manchester’s Central Library during March: one in indigenous languages and one in English. We are immensely proud of the second link in the chain, a stanza written in te reo Māori (and translated into English) by Waiariki Parata-Taiapa.
