Writers Make With Music

The word music comes from the Greek Muses who were believed to inspire the arts, and the word poetry comes from the Greek 'poïesis', from the verb 'to make'.

Making with music is exactly what five Dunedin writers and poets will be doing at Writers Make With Music on Thursday October 6th in the Dunningham Suite, Dunedin Public Library. Beginning at 6pm each writer will bring the music out of their words or accompany their words with music. The musical element will take different forms, integrating live music into the performance, isolating the musical elements in a work, or perhaps simply the manner of reading will be, in itself, essentially musical. One poet might speak-sing 'a capella', or a lyricist might perform with accompaniment. The line-up of David Eggleton, Ian Loughran, Ian Chapman, Bill Direen, Lynley Edmeades is a rich array of the crême of local writers working in this field (for which, see profiles).

At the time of writing we can confirm that Ian Chapman will perform original songs with a goblin, ghost and ghoul theme. Ian Loughran will perform poetry dedicated to the memory of chanteuse Nico, and will be accompanied by Jackson Harry on guitar. David Eggleton's performances are themselves highly musical events, and Lynley Edmeades will announce her performance details shortly. I will read a dedication to another NZ poet accompanied by Dunedin's Stuart Porter on Saxophone, and his own air-powered organ.

Bill Direen

Bill Direen's latest novel Enclosures 2, is a group of five stories drawing on the genres of autobiography, poetry and science fiction. The centre piece of the novel is a short fiction about the creation of an unclassifiable music album in the basement of the father of one of the boys, while the latter is working for the Department of Conservation on the Peninsula. This evening on the 6th October will be the first event of many poetry and music events, including a music event at the Tunnel in Port Chalmers on Friday 7th October, part of a national tour that will end in Auckland a month later.
