Foreword

Out with the old, in with the new?

Well, not really. Libraries are certainly changed spaces, but the BOOKS remain.

While it is evident that many people still view libraries in terms of just books, there is so much more is going on in our physical and digital spaces. The variety of activities, services and classes on offer at the Library includes: digital archiving, digital e-books, e-audio and e-access to newspapers, magazines and funding opportunities, competitions, Stepping Up computer classes, Spark Jump modem access, talks, events, internet access, computers for customer use, book a librarian service, reading programmes, craft clubs, storytimes, Lego clubs, community meeting rooms, Council service centres, outreach services, and book clubs. And this list is not exhaustive!

During May we will be hosting Tech Week talks, and Music Month performances, with vibrant music all month long at our various libraries, popular with musicians and audience members alike and confirming Dunedin as a ‘breeding ground’ for new music.

Christchurch’s new Library ‘Tūranga’, which is a leading-edge development in global library terms, confirms the place of libraries in today’s world. Gone are the days people muttered about how libraries would be dead in coming years. Now communities look to their libraries for access to everything: technologies, information, equal opportunity, a sense of belonging, entertainment, exhibitions and more.

Dunedin Public Libraries is developing a new strategic plan for the next 3-5 years and within that time Council is supporting development with funding for Bookbus replacement/s, refurbishment of the City Library and a new South Dunedin Library and Community Complex, all of which will ensure Dunedin library customers and those who will not doubt ‘discover us’ over the next few years will be well served. Dunedin is growing, and the Library continues to do so too, expecting to meet increased demand for its services and continued growth in community engagements.
