South D's Just Returned

Discovered delights from the South Dunedin Pop-up Library

I just love it when I come across books that customers have returned and see what gems they have been reading, especially when I realise that it’s an author I like to read, and I’ve missed a book!

Or when I get recommended a book and then I end up reading every book that author has written, which happened with Danielle Hawkins (a New Zealand author).

· Dinner at Rose’s

· Chocolate Cake for Breakfast (also available as an e-book)

· The Pretty Delicious Café (also available as an e-book)

· When it All Went to Custard (also available as an e-book)

These books were great fun to read, nice and light but enjoyable. I found that each book I read got better and better and I couldn’t wait to get to the next one.

My latest hold is Last Bridge Before Home by Lily Malone – Well worth the wait, but I couldn’t help myself by diving straight in. It didn’t take me long to get hooked into the drama that surrounds Jaydah Tully and Brix Honeychurch. As things start to unravel and we learn the true nature of the Tully household, we understand why Jaydah won’t leave her Mum behind. But don’t forget the sister that no-one knows about.

Browsing the recent returns I discovered Something in the Wine by Tricia Stringer – I can’t believe that I missed this book when it first came out. Browsing the recent returns can be very rewarding. Keely Mitchell’s travel plans change after suffering a medical event and she ends up recovering at a Margaret River vineyard, but that is just the start. The rumours spark around the community causing lots of problems and Keely is right in the middle of it. Can she find a place that she can heal and move forward in her life or will she go back to her family?

The Drifter by Anthea Hodgson was another wonderful discovery - I really enjoyed following the stories of Cate, Henry and Ida. When Cate flees the city, she seeks refuge at great aunt Ida’s farm where she meets Henry, a swagman. The rundown farm and house are not what Cate is used to, but she needs to find a way to escape her past and it’s not going away. We follow her journey of growth and start to see the real Cate; the courage, the strength and finally the truth.

When you are down to your last book and take to browsing the shelves, you can sometimes find the best books. That's how I came across The Freedom Broker by K. J. Howe, what a great find. Thea is a kidnap and ransom specialist, a role that came about because of events that happened many years ago when she was a child and has shaped her into the person she is today. But things take a turn when her father is kidnapped. There are many twists and turns that keep you engaged in the story, I found it so hard to put down, only to get to the end of the book and realise that the story didn’t end there.

The next book Skyjack is just as good and as usual I couldn’t put that down either. So, if you are after a good Thriller give this author a go, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
