Summer Reading Programme: Around the World in 80 Books

Around the World in 80 Books

Dunedin Public Libraries’ 2016-17 Summer Reading Programme is a grand expedition to enable curious explorers to travel to exciting places through the power of reading books.

The aim of this year's Summer Reading Programme is for children to travel in their imagination far beyond their everyday world on a voyage of infinite discovery. Every book they read is an adventure, so youngsters can unleash their potential by reading as many books as they can. Children can set their own goal for how many books they would like to challenge themselves to read, as long as they read at least five over the summer.

Children who register for the Reading Programme at community libraries will receive a reading card to record their progress and will receive a prize on completion of their goal.

Those who register with the City Library’s Reading Programme will receive a delightful booklet, which takes the form of a ‘boarding pass’ to add to the the sense that they are embarking on a grand adventure. This will guide them through their journey with ideas, inspiration and encouragement to edge them closer to their goal.

City Library has partnered with the Otago Museum and the University Book Shop Otago to offer a choice of three locations from which to start the Programme – the Library, the Museum or the Book Shop. At each location there is a challenge for children to complete to add to the fun, and encourage their exploration skills. All children registered with the City Library’s Summer Reading Programme, who succeed in completing their journey by reaching their reading goal by Tuesday 31st January, will be invited to a grand prize-giving to receive their expedition certificate and enjoy some very special entertainment at a home-coming reception.

We wish our curious explorers the very best of luck!
