Community Law Otago offers free legal information, advice and education to the people of Otago.

Advice clinics

At drop-in free legal advice sessions, Community Law Otago provides initial legal information and advice. In special circumstances, they continue with clients on an ongoing basis.

If you need initial legal advice come along to one of their drop-in advice sessions at Floor 1, 169 Princes Street Dunedin. You can find our advice clinic times on their website. You will be seen by a volunteer law student, who will find the law and information required to resolve the issue. The student will then discuss the options for resolution with a qualified lawyer, before delivering this information or advice to you.

Legal Education

Community Law Otago is committed to educating members of our community about their legal rights and responsibilities. They provide free legal education on topics that affect the community such as tenancy, employment, police powers and family law. They present to a wide range of groups, including marae, schools, staff and support groups. They would love to extend their outreach, so please email legaledu@dclc.org.nz if you are interested in receiving a legal education talk.

With the support of Dunedin Public Library, Community Law Otago is offering a public ‘Law for Tea’ series again this year. They will be held on the ground floor of the library and everyone is welcome!

All sessions 5.30pm – 6.15pm. FREE

  • Tuesday 26th March, 5.30pm – Employment Rights: Issues in the workplace and our rights as an employee
  • Tuesday 30th April, 5.30pm – Consumer Law: What are your rights when you shop?
  • Tuesday 4th June, 5.30pm – Police Powers: Insight on the powers the police have in certain situations, such as arrests and searches, and what your responsibilities are
  • Tuesday 9th July, 5.30pm – Wills Workshop: The importance of wills and associated issues
  • Tuesday 13th August, 5.30pm – Enduring Power of Attorney: Planning ahead – why you might need one (or two) and how you can appoint, supervise and remove power of attorneys
  • Tuesday 17th September, 5.30pm – Relationship Property: What is relationship property and how is it split upon separation or death?
