In our last issue of 2015 before the Christmas festivities are upon us, we say goodbye to a Sailor, take a slow gondola ride through La Serenissima, and scale the heights of Mount Everest, all with a weather eye on our holiday reading wish lists.

Great art often inspires conjecture and speculation about the people depicted in the paintings. There are many examples of novels in which the writer has run with their imagination and conjured up stories, mixing history with their own take on events, and producing very compelling narratives.  Graeme Brazier’s sudden death in early September this year, coming after that of band mate Dave McArtney’s passing in 2013, has effectively brought the curtain down on one of the best rock and roll bands this country has ever produced.

Everest, the film that opened the Venice Film Festival this year, is about the 1996 Everest climbing disaster where eight lives were lost in a ferocious storm, including New Zealanders Rob Hall and Andy Harris.
