New Zealand Music Month 2016: Rattling the Libraries' Shelves for More Than a Decade

This is Dunedin Public Libraries' 12th year supporting New Zealand Music Month, enabling local musicians to reach a wider audience, and giving folks a chance to experience the wide range of musical talent this city has to offer.

It has been really cool looking back at previous years' programmes and remembering some of  the great performers who have played for us in the past. Here is a small selection.

Scurvy Dogs

A rock band, that put the arrrr into punk rock music! Renowned for their sweaty, passionate and powerful live performances, they have been causing mayhem since 2004.

The Scurvy Dogs are calling it a day and hanging up their swords in 2016.

Both Sides of the Line

Little known factoid: The name Both Sides of the Line comes from a song title sung by Wanda Jackson.

Delgirl

Having played many times at the library during NZ Music Month Delgirl won the Tui Folk album of the year award in 2008.

Jake Cropley

Founding member of Dunedin band The Sleeves Jake was selected to travel to Scotland to represent Dunedin and NZ at the worlds largest folk music festoival Celtic connections in early 2015.

He went over to play two shows and ended up doing five – not bad at age 17!

Molly Devine

A recent graduate of the University of Otago music degree, Molly plays experimental, blues and soul music. She is currently looking for a backpack that holds a keyboard in order to travel the world with her music.

Mansweat

Originally a joke band put together to do metal covers of todays hits, these guys ended up on TV on X Factor with those controversial judges Natasha Kills and Willy Moon. They didn't win but boy they had fun.

Martin Phillipps

Founding member of iconic Dunedin band The Chills Martin has played many NZ Music Month shows at the library. He recently released his newest album Silver Bullets to critical acclaim worldwide and tours the US/UK and Europe in May and June this year.

Mentalist collective

A collection of Dunedin songwriters and multi-instrumentalists who love to sing and harmonize, the Mentalist Collective bring a unique kiwiana sound inspired from indie folk and rock.

For this year's line-up go to the Libraries' Music Month page, where you can find the full programme of free gigs at all Dunedin Public Libraries.
