Accessible Collections

Dunedin Public Libraries aspire to be vibrant, accessible and community-focused as we work towards playing our part in making Dunedin “one of the world’s great small cities”.

One of the ways in which it does this is by making sure that its collections and services are relevant to those in our community who have different needs due to visual impairment or a print disability.

Dunedin Public Libraries offers a wide range of materials in alternative formats. These include large print books; talking books (on CD, MP3 CD, ‘Playaways’); and DVDs which have subtitles for the hearing impaired, and audio descriptions for those with vision impairment.

Downloadable resources include eBooks, eAudio and eMagazines. All have apps which make selection and downloading very streamlined. Once they are on a smart phone, tablet, iPad, iPod Touch or computer the accessibility features of the device can be used to full advantage.

Titles in all collections include a wide choice of best-sellers, fiction and non-fiction.

An exciting new initiative in partnership with the Blind Foundation means access to even more titles has been opened up for people who have a certified visual impairment or print disability. Read more about the benefits of the partnership in this issue’s article 10,000 reasons to read with your ears.

For more information on these collections, see our website or ask at your local library.
