Depression

by Dunedin poet Ann Jacobson

My Mother woke from the light

close to earth, a beautiful

moon through bedroom curtains

shape her body, her voice

not needed, it was just there.

Without prejudice or favour

everyone could look if they

wanted to, respect and guardian-

ship she called to stand in this

moonlight, out of sleep

a tulip from the ground .
