Book Adventurers’ Club

Encouraging young people to fall in love with reading is one of the key goals of the Library. Our popular after school book clubs offer a fun way to discover the joy of books and word play.

Dunedin City Library, held its first Children’s Book Club meeting on Thursday 3rd March on the second floor. The session ran from 4.00 - 5.00pm, with about 13 enthusiastic children attending, and a few parents. They suggested several great names for the club and, after a vote was taken, we decided on the name Book Adventurers Club. We talked about our favourite books and characters, and ran two fun activities.

In April, the Book Adventurers Club was themed around “Tropical rainforests” thanks to a suggestion from one of the Adventurers!

Abducted by Aliens!

This is one of the word games we played at book group. The kids didn't know what the story was about, and we asked them to give us a different word for each of the following:

1. Verb ending in ING

2. Verb ending in ED

3. Verb ending in ED

4. Noun

5. Verb

6. Animal

7. Noun

8. Noun

9. Noun

10. Place

11. Number

The ‘Book Adventures club’  then filled in the blanks (words in bold) to create the following funny story.

I was skipping along the sidewalk when an alien walked me. I was shouted into their dog and it blasted off. Then the alien asked me to snore on the T.V. I was surprised they spoke English. The aliens had a pet wolf. We ordered a elephant and it tasted good. As we came back into the galaxy, one alien asked me if I wanted a spider. I said no I would like a New Zealand. He got it for me and then dropped me off at my England. Then I realised I had been gone for 1 years.
