10,000 stories to read with your ears

Dunedin Public Libraries is pleased to announce the launch of an exciting new initiative with direct benefits for those in our community who have a significant visual impairment, are unable to hold or manipulate books or are unable to focus or move their eyes.

Dunedin Public Libraries has formed a partnership with the Blind Foundation to help people with a visual impairment, or print disability, gain access to the Blind Foundation’s library resources.

Previously access to the Blind Foundation Library was restricted to those who are legally blind, but this project will allow anyone with a certified visual impairment or print disability to become associate members of the Blind Foundation, allowing them access to the library.

There are over 10,000 audiobooks in the library collection, both fiction and nonfiction, including a good selection of New Zealand books that have been narrated in the Blind Foundation’s studios.

Access will be through a BookLink app, which allows the downloading of books onto iPhones (4S and later), later-model iPads and the latest iPod Touch. They can then be read without requiring an internet connection.

Dunedin Public Libraries staff can provide support with the Blind Foundation associate membership registration process, and with using the app. Visit your library for more information.
