The Power of Food
With the bewildering array of information about what we should and shouldn’t eat, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to make the right choices about food.

* Our bodies - absorbing nutrients
* Research – berries and asthma
* Nutrient deficiencies in our population (Ministry of Health)
* Disease prevention by food
* Cabbage, free-range eggs, and mince
* Cellular control of zinc toxicity

* Meaningful package nutrients
* Beyond the Heart Foundation food pyramid
* Salt, hypertension and the weight of industry
* Other uses of the free government database

* Insulin as food glucose response and body hormone
* Energy-rich but nutrient-poor food choices
* Self-monitoring of food nutrients to reduce Diabetes 2 risk

* Vitamin D – metabolism, deficiency and the sun; supplements
* Fibre, vitamin C, cabbage and potatoes
* Fish oil and biology of omega-3 lipids
* Iron, calcium and vitamin A: nutrients are easy to find

Theatre

Lunchtime Bites: Grounded
Sample the lastest play of the season from the Fortune Theatre over a hot cuppa, and go into the draw to win tickets to the show!

When an unexpected pregnancy grounds an F16 fighter pilot, she finds herself repurposed to flying remote-controlled drones from an air-conditioned trailer in the Las Vegas desert, hunting terrorists on screen by day and being a wife and mother at night. The boundaries between the desert where she lives and the one she patrols virtually from half a world away soon begin to blur.

Winner of a Fringe First award in 2013, this is a haunting, extraordinary and topical play about war, family and empathy.

Author Talks

Helene Wong: Inside Outside
Author of Being Chinese: A New Zealander’s Story, Helene Wong, presents a talk first given as the Michael King Lecture at the Auckland Writers’ Festival in May 2016.

In contemplation of the ambivalence many New Zealand Chinese feel about themselves and their place in Aotearoa, Helene considers what it means to be New Zealand born, yet placed somehow ‘outside’ of New Zealand culture.

Brought to you by University Book Shop Otago, in partnership with Dunedin Public Libraries and Bridget Williams Books, and introduced by Professor Barbara Brookes, Department of History and Art History of the University of Otago.

Join us for drinks and canapés from 5.30pm
