Science for Supper (with Ice-cream)

Rediscovering your inner science.

There has been a lot of hair-raising science fun happening at our libraries this year and there’s more to come. The Library has recently hosted several of the University of Otago Chemistry and Physics Science Outreach events called ‘Science for Supper’. With the invitation going out to those aged ‘10 – 110’, children and adults alike enjoyed meeting university scientists, having a chat about science and trying fun, hands-on experiments, including ice-cream making.

Although the ‘Science for Supper’ series has finished there is more science fun to be had at the library with the New Zealand International Science Festival starting on the 8th of July. The theme this year is # BE CURIOUS … Rediscover your inner science! Aside from hosting various events at the City and Mosgiel Libraries during the Science Festival, we will also have some ‘discovery’ activities at all libraries. Join in the Great Big Dino Hunt to track down dinosaurs on the loose. Follow the tracks, then discover the science in dinosaur footprints. Running from the 9th – 15th of July, the Great Big Dino Hunt is on during normal library opening hours.

Visit our ‘pop-up’ library for 7 – 12 year olds at the Botanic Garden Information Centre for the NZ International Science Festival – Our Living World event. We will be there from 1-4pm with some fun craft activities that are both a bit ‘batty’ and a real ‘hoot’. There will be books to browse and borrow selected from the library’s Youth collections focusing on Our Living World. So bring your library card and we’ll see you there.
