Councillor Christine Garey presents gift from City of Literature to the Secretary General
Our part of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™ may have come to end, but it’s nice to know a little piece of Ōtepoti Dunedin will stay with FIFA forever.
FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura was recently in Dunedin for the Japan v Costa Rica match, held at Dunedin Stadium on 26 July.
Councillor Christine Garey was there too and presented a gift from our City of Literature by Ōtepoti jeweller Jane Dodd to the Secretary General.
The work drew on the Creative Cities connection between Dunedin, as a UNESCO City of Literature, and the Secretary General’s place of birth, Dakar (in Senegal), which is a Creative City of Media Arts.
The artwork included words by the late Dunedin writer Roi Colbert, who wrote brilliantly about sport and many other things, and an accompanying small book on a necklace.
Ms Samoura loved the gift and insisted on wearing it immediately!
And, by the strangest of coincidences, we also discovered the Secretary General and Jane Dodd were born on the same day.
Just another reason to love the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™.
